With wit and insight, the novel depicts German high society of a hundred years ago, including family dynamics and the importance of keeping up appearances. “A Legacy” was Bedford’s debut novel, inspired by her own upbringing in Germany at the start of the 20th century – it is a fictionalised account of her parents’ marriage. Sybille Bedford (born Sybille von Schoenebeck) was a German – British writer. In 1993, she received the Golden PEN Award for her lifetime services to literature.
