More than a book blog
Many readers are searching for their next great novel but are overwhelmed by endless recommendations, bestseller lists and social media trends. Rather than reviewing every new release, we focus on novels with a strong sense of place that we believe deserve a wider readership.
Our selections include internationally acclaimed classics, literary prize winners and modern favourites, but also forgotten masterpieces, novels in translation, and books from lesser-known literary traditions. Some books are famous; others deserve to be. We believe both have a place on our shelves.
Discover places through literature
Every place has its own stories.
Some books capture a city’s unique atmosphere. Others illuminate a country’s history, culture or identity. Some reveal regions that rarely appear in mainstream fiction. Together, they show that literature can deepen our understanding of a destination in ways that no guidebook, social media post or algorithmically generated summary can fully capture.
How we choose books
Not every novel that mentions a place is included on this website.
We look for books in which the setting plays an important role in the story. We also aim for literary quality and geographical diversity.
Our recommendations range from Nobel Prize winners and celebrated classics to contemporary fiction, historical novels and remarkable translated works. Whenever possible, we also seek out books from countries and regions that receive little international attention (where an English translation is available), because every literary culture has stories worth discovering.
The focus is on novels rather than non-fiction, short stories, or poetry. Each listing provides basic information to give readers a general sense of the book. We do not attempt in-depth literary analysis – other websites do that very well – but aim to provide enough detail for readers to decide whether a book might be for them.
Focus on European Books
Bookmarked Places currently focuses on books from Europe, a part of the world I find endlessly worth exploring. Few continents combine such extraordinary cultural diversity with such a strong sense of shared history and heritage. From Norway to Portugal, from Ireland to Bulgaria, and from Cyprus to Estonia, every country has produced writers who offer unique perspectives on the places they know best.
Our long-term goal is to build a comprehensive guide to European fiction organised by place, helping readers discover both new destinations through books and new books through destinations.
Over time, the scope may expand, but for now the aim is to offer a selection of books that bring European places to life.
Bookmarked Places is for readers looking for the perfect novel for their next trip, searching for fiction set in a favourite city, or eager to explore another culture through literature. We hope it will inspire your next read, and perhaps your next journey as well.
Our mission is simple: to help readers discover Europe, one novel at a time.
Reading Books: An Open and Personal Approach
Where relevant, we mention if a novel is particularly complex or challenging. Still, reading is always a personal experience. A book that moves one reader deeply may leave another unmoved. Enjoyment of a book often depends on personal interests, timing, and life experience. Even the most celebrated classics will not appeal to everyone – the key is to read widely and explore different perspectives.
No Ratings, No Negative Reviews
We do not use star ratings or other simple ranking systems. If we do not enjoy a book, we simply do not feature it. This avoids unfairly criticising a work that another reader might love and respects the efforts authors put into their writing. Non-listed books are not unworthy of attention; they may simply not fit the site’s selection criteria, or we may not have had the time to read them.
About me
Every website has a story. The idea for this website grew out of two lifelong passions: reading and travelling. Whenever I travel, I enjoy reading novels set in the places I visit. Equally, many books have inspired me to learn more about places I had never considered exploring. Over time, I realised that it was surprisingly difficult to find good book recommendations organised by location, and the idea for Bookmarked Places was born.
I’m Bart, an avid reader and enthusiastic traveller from Belgium. Whenever possible, I enjoy reading books in their original language, whether in English, Dutch, French, Spanish or German. By profession, I am an intellectual property lawyer specialising in copyright, trademarks and emerging technologies. Like many people, I would happily travel more often if time allowed. Between family life, a legal practice and everyday responsibilities, that is not always possible. Fortunately, books offer another way to explore the world, and I find it a real joy to end the day by immersing myself in a good novel.
Curiosity has always been one of my greatest motivations. I have greatly enjoyed researching the books featured on this website, discovering remarkable authors and hidden gems along the way, and I am happy to share them with other readers.
