“Blackwater” is a thriller and a literary crime novel. It is not merely a story about who committed the murders – it delves into deeper themes such as people’s motivations for not telling the truth, environmental issues, and tensions between Swedish and Sami people. Kerstin Ekman won many literature prizes with “Blackwater”, including the August Prize (1993), the Best Swedish Crime Novel Award (1993), and the Nordic Council Literary Prize (1994). “Blackwater” was probably the most successful Swedish novel of the 1990s. The book was adapted into a Swedish television series in 2023.
