Egon is a ‘bon vivant’ and writer of trashy romance novels, living in a bleak Yugoslav foundry town near the Austrian and Italian borders (in present-day Slovenia) during the 1980s. When he discovers he used the last drop of his Cartier perfume, a chain of absurd events is set in motion.

“Crumbs” (published in the USA as “The Cartier Project”), a dark comedy set in the final years of Communist Yugoslavia, won the award for Best Slovenian Novel of the year in 1987 from both pro-government and the pro-opposition newspapers, and became a local bestseller. In 2016, Slovenian author Miha Mazzini also won the prestigious Kresnik Award for his novel “Otroštvo” (“Childhood”).
