“Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh” is a novel about a married couple who reluctantly nurse an old aristocratic woman on the Croatian island of Rab. They long to resume their own lives and feel trapped, secretly wishing the elderly woman would pass away.

“Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh” is a slow-paced, symbolic, and at times claustrophobic novel about the passing of life on an isolated Croatian island. The novel is considered a classic of Croatian literature, but not an easy read. “Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh” won many literary prizes, including the prestigious NIN Award for best Yugoslavian novel of the year in 1968. Slobodan Novak won the Vladimir Nazor Award for lifetime achievement in 1990.
