“Hotel du Lac” is an elegant and entertaining novel about love and human relationships, set in an old-fashioned lakeside hotel in Switzerland. In 1984, “Hotel du Lac” surprisingly won the Booker Prize. While some critics dismissed it as lightweight and predictable, the controversy did not prevent this unpretentious novel from becoming a bestseller throughout the 1980s. Anita Brookner, a British novelist and art historian, made her literary debut at the age of 53.
