“My Cat Yugoslavia” is a novel about Bekim, a young refugee in Finland, and his mother, who grew up in Kosovo. As an immigrant, a Muslim, and a gay man, Bekim struggles to find his place in Finnish society. One night, he meets a talking cat that moves in with him, further complicating his life.

“My Cat Yugoslavia” is the debut novel of Kosovo-born Finnish author Pajtim Statovci. It won the Helsingin Sanomat Literature Prize in 2014. The novel explores the challenges of adapting to a new country and accepting one’s identity. Statovci later won the prestigious Finlandia Prize for his third novel, “Bolla”.
