Summary of Quiet Chaos
When Pietro’s partner dies unexpectedly, his life is turned upside down. After the funeral, as he drops his daughter off at school for the first time, he decides not to go to work and instead remains on a bench outside the school, quietly observing life go by. Over the following weeks, friends, colleagues, and family members urge him to return to his previous routine. One by one, they visit him on the bench to talk about their own personal troubles.

“Quiet Chaos” is a beautifully written novel about loss, grief, and the tension between success and happiness, told through the perspective of an emotionally restrained Italian man. The novel was adapted into an Italian film in 2008 by Antonello Grimaldi, starring Nanni Moretti. Sandro Veronesi won the prestigious Premio Strega twice – first in 2006 for “Quiet Chaos”, and again in 2020 for his novel “The Hummingbird”.
