Summary of The Good Hope

“The Good Hope” is a historical novel set in the Faroe Islands during the late 17th century. It is an epic tale of suppression and resistance, and of the conflict between darkness and light, personified by the figures of a military commander and a pastor.

Reasons to read The Good Hope

“The Good Hope” won the Nordic Council’s Prize for Literature in 1965. William Heinesen also received the Swedish Academy Nordic Prize and the Danish Critics’ Prize for Literature (Kritikerprisen). Though Heinesen was from the Faroe Islands, he wrote in Danish. This prompted him to withdraw his candidacy for the Nobel Prize in 1981, believing it more fitting for an author writing in Faroese to receive the honour.
