Summary of The Jasmine Isle

 

Beautiful young Orsa loves the fisherman Spyros but is forced by her tyrannical mother to marry Nikos, another fisherman and son of a wealthy family. Upon returning from her honeymoon, she finds that her younger sister Mosca has married Spyros. This situation leads to a myriad of conflicts and emotions, especially when the husbands are away at sea for long periods, and the sisters must find a way to coexist.

“The Jasmine Isle” is a modern Greek tragedy, set on the Cyclades island of Andros. Ioanna Karystiani, a Greek author and screenwriter, received the Greek State Award for Literature in 1998 for this novel, which was later adapted into the film “Little England” (the Greek title of the novel is “Mikra Anglia” or “Little England”). In 2007, Karystiani won the State Prize for Fiction again with her novel “Swell” (“Σουέλ”).
